The short answer
No Happy Wheels 2 has been released, and no release date has been confirmed.
This is one of the highest-volume questions about the game — the term draws more search traffic than most of the actual game’s features — so it is worth being precise about what is known and what is not.
What is actually known
The community wiki documents the sequel as in production since late October to early November 2012, and records these developer statements:
- Unlike the original, the player will be required to download the game rather than play it in a browser.
- It is being programmed in C++ and uses OpenGL for rendering, rather than Flash.
- It will keep the cartoon-like visual style of the original.
- The developer has said he would rather release a finished product than show development stages publicly.
Wikipedia likewise records that the sequel has been in development since at least 2013 and remained in development as of December 2020.
What is not confirmed
Everything below should be treated as unverified:
- Any release window. The wiki mentions a possibility of a 2025/26 release, but a possibility recorded on a community wiki is not a confirmation, and it has not been announced officially.
- Any price. The wiki notes that comments about pricing were made in the context of level creation and that nothing has been confirmed. Do not treat “free to play” or a price figure as settled.
- Any feature list. Information has been discussed in the official Discord, which is a community channel; the wiki itself notes that not much is publicly known.
If you see a site stating a Happy Wheels 2 release date with confidence, check whether it cites anything. In practice, none of the pages ranking for this question do.
The big source of confusion: the Steam release
When the Steam store page went live in early September 2026, a large part of the internet assumed it was Happy Wheels 2. It is not.
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Is the Steam release a new game? | No. It is the original Happy Wheels |
| What version is it? | Build 1.99 |
| Does it have new levels? | No new official levels were listed with the release |
| Does it look different? | No. The visuals are unchanged |
| Is it the sequel? | No |
The Steam release is a re-release of the 2010 game with achievements, controller support, offline level downloads and no ads. It starts a new version numbering line, which is where some of the “this must be a sequel” confusion comes from.
Why the sequel question keeps coming back
Two things keep it alive:
- The community remakes the sequel constantly in the editor. User-created levels and full fan projects styled as “Happy Wheels 2” circulate continuously, which makes it look like something official exists.
- It has been in development for over a decade. A project that old is always almost news, and “still in development” gets reported as an update again and again.
Where to watch for real news
Only two places carry official weight:
- The official Steam announcements for app 4705510, which is where the developer publishes updates. A sequel announcement would surface there or on the store.
- The official Discord, linked from the Steam store page’s support information, where the developer has historically discussed development.
Anything on a third-party site should be treated as unconfirmed until one of those two says it.
What to play instead
If you want more Happy Wheels and the sequel is not here, the realistic options are:
- The Steam release, with all 80 achievements as a progression system the original never had.
- The free browser version on the creator’s own site.
- The community level library — more than 5 million levels, with a date filter for finding the classics.
- The editor, if you have ideas of your own.
