What a featured level is
A featured level is a user-created level that has been hand-picked to appear on the PLAY screen of the main menu. The community wiki states that they are chosen by the game’s creator, Jim Bonacci, and that he has never published the criteria he uses.
That uncertainty is worth internalising before you go looking for a formula. Featured levels are assumed to be levels of unusual quality, entertainment, originality or innovation — but nothing confirms a scoring system.
Some levels get featured to showcase a feature rather than for pure quality. A level built around the glass panel, or one built around a new weapon, is demonstrating what the editor can do as much as it is being fun.
How to reach them
- Launch the game.
- Choose PLAY from the main menu.
- Browse the featured list.
Demo builds of the browser game historically shipped with only the first few featured levels, which is one reason different people remember different “first levels”.
How levels get picked
The old official FAQ answer, quoted by the community wiki, is the closest thing to a published guideline. Its advice to creators:
- There is no guarantee that a good level will be featured.
- Aim for a level that is fun to play, looks decent, and can be understood by new players.
- A fun level matters more than a detailed one. The FAQ’s own example is spending hours drawing blades of grass instead of making the level worth retrying.
- Test the level with friends or family. If they do not enjoy it or do not understand it, it is unlikely to rate well.
- A level should take roughly 30 seconds to 2 minutes to complete.
- There are no formal rules — “if you create something amazing, it could still be featured”.
The single most useful line is the one about retrying: if dying makes you want to try again, the level works. If dying makes you want to close the game, it does not.
Notable featured levels from the community list
The community wiki’s featured list names these as among the more popular entries. Treat this as a starting point for the level browser, not as a ranking:
- BMX Park II
- Obstacle Course?
- Happy Green Hills
- Speed bridge
- Laboratory 1
- The Dawn of the Dead series, partially
One of these names appears directly in the Steam achievement list: Express Delivery requires beating Happy Green Hills in under ten seconds, and Opportunities, Not Obstacles requires beating Obstacle Course? in less than twenty seconds. That makes those two levels genuinely worth learning rather than merely famous.
Featured levels and the Steam achievements
A large block of the Steam achievement list is built around featured levels:
- Purpose Fulfilled — beat all winnable featured levels.
- Eleven character achievements, each requiring three featured levels beaten with a specific character.
This has a practical consequence. If you are chasing completion, your featured-level runs are also progress toward eleven other achievements, and they feed the long-term statistics counters at the same time. Failure on a featured level is never wasted time.
Using the level browser instead
Featured levels are a curated slice. The full library is much larger — the Steam store page states access to more than 5 million user-created levels — and the browser is how you reach it.
Two Steam-specific tools help:
- Select Date lets you jump to levels published in a specific period, which is how you find the classics from the early years.
- Offline downloads let you keep levels that you want to replay without a connection.
A spoiler warning
Featured levels are worth playing blind the first time. The puzzle is usually the point, and a level that looks impossible for ten minutes before a solution appears is the intended experience. If you want help with a specific one, The Secret Code walkthrough is the only level page we publish, because it is the one with a genuinely well-documented solution.
